Hu Han is a Professor and Ph.D. advisor at the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ICT, CAS). He received his Ph.D. from ICT, CAS in 2011. Following that, he conducted research in biometric recognition at Michigan State University and Google, where he was a core member of the Google Abacus project. In 2015, he returned to ICT, CAS. His primary research interests are computer vision, biometric recognition, and medical visual intelligence. Professor Han has published over 100 papers in leading international journals, such as IEEE TPAMI, IEEE TIP, IEEE TIFS, IEEE TMI, and IEEE BIOM, as well as in top-tier conferences, including CVPR, ICCV, NeurIPS, ECCV, MICCAI, and AAAI. He has also contributed to three academic books on artificial intelligence in medical imaging. His work has been cited more than 8,800 times (Google Scholar, H-index: 46 as of March 2025). Professor Han has led or participated in over 10 major national projects, including National Key R&D Programs, the Technology Innovation 2030 – New Generation Artificial Intelligence project, 973 Program projects, NSFC key and general projects, and CAS international cooperation projects.
Professor Han has received several prestigious awards, including the Natural Science Award (First Prize) from the China Society of Image and Graphics (ranked 3rd), the Best Paper Award of IEEE Signal Processing Society (corresponding author), and four conference paper awards, including Best Paper Award of the Workshop at IEEE ICCV 2021, Best Poster Paper Award at IEEE FG 2019, Best Poster Paper Award at CCBR 2018, and Best Student Paper Award at CCBR 2016. He was also selected for the Youth Innovation Promotion Association of CAS (2018) and was named an Elsevier “Highly Cited Chinese Researcher” consecutively in 2022 and 2023.
Professor Han serves as an Associate Editor for leading journals including IEEE Transactions on Biometrics, Behavior, and Identity Science (TBIOM) and Pattern Recognition. He has also been an Area Chair, Senior Program Committee Member, or Session Chair for major international conferences such as CVPR 2025, MICCAI 2025, CVPR 2024, MICCAI 2024, MICCAI 2023, FG 2023, ECCV 2022, ISBI 2022, IJCAI 2021, and ICPR 2020. He has actively contributed to promoting emerging research directions by organizing over 10 special sessions and academic workshops at prestigious conferences, including ICCV, CVPR, IJCAI, FG, WACV, and PRCV. He has also guest-edited special issues on topics such as generative biometric recognition, facial expression recognition, and non-contact physiological signal measurement in well-known journals like IEEE TBIOM, Machine Vision Applications, and Journal of Image and Graphics.
Professor Han has supervised or co-supervised over 20 Master's and Ph.D. students, many of whom have received prestigious awards, such as the National Scholarship, CAS President's Excellent Award, Beijing Outstanding Graduate Award, UCAS Outstanding Graduate Award, and numerous named scholarships. His students have gone on to pursue Ph.D. degrees at world-renowned universities such as Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Columbia University, Michigan State University (MSU), University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), and HKUST (Guangzhou). Others have secured positions at leading tech companies, including Tencent, Alibaba, Baidu, Meituan, Youdao, and Kuaishou. Professor Han's mentorship has also encouraged students to excel in international competitions. His students have achieved Runner-up in the Attention Estimation Challenge (ICMI 2018), Champion in the Tattoo Detection Challenge (NIST 2018), Champion in the Coronary CT Segmentation Challenge (MICCAI 2020), and Runner-up in the Emotion Analysis Challenge (ECCV 2022).
