Title: Visual AI: From Visual Sensing to Visual Intelligence

Summary:

Artificial intelligence is the technology of realizing humanoid intelligence by computer. Artificial intelligence has dramatically changed human life over the past few decades, but has never been so pervasive in life as it is today. Since visual perception is the most important way to understand the outside world for human beings, computer vision has long been one of the most important research topics in AI. In this report, we will share our experiences in implementing visual intelligence applications by exploiting computer vision and deep learning. The specific applications include human behavior understanding, personal fashion style analysis, intelligent social media, industrial manufacturing applications, and so on.

Brief introduction of the speaker:

Wen-Huang Cheng received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in computer science and information engineering from National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan (R.O.C.), in 2002 and 2004, respectively, where he received the Ph.D. degree from the Graduate Institute of Networking and Multimedia in 2008.

He is an Associate Research Fellow with the Research Center for Information Technology Innovation (CITI), Academia Sinica, Taipei, where he is the Founding Leader with the Multimedia Computing Laboratory (MCLab), CITI, and an Assistant Research Fellow with a joint appointment in the Institute of Information Science. Before joining Academia Sinica, he was a Principal Researcher with MagicLabs, HTC Corporation, Taoyuan, Taiwan, from 2009 to 2010. His research interest includes multimedia, artificial intelligence, computer vision, machine learning, social media, and financial technology.

He has published many papers in leading ACM/IEEE international journals and important international conferences such as ACM MM, IJCAI, AAAI, CVPR, ICCV, etc. He is Associate Editor of IEEE Multimedia, Distinguished Lecturer of APSIPA, Senior member and member of Multimedia Technology Committee of China computer Society, member of IEEE MSA and IEEE VSPC, etc. He received many honors including 2018 MSRA Collaborative Research Award, 2011-2017 Outstanding Young Scholar Award from MOST (Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan), 2015 Outstanding Youth Electrical Engineer Award from CIEE (Chinese Institute of Electrical Engineering), 2015 Top 10% Paper Award of IEEE International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP), 2014 ACM MM Grand Challenge Award, 2014 Outstanding Social Youth of Taipei Municipal, and etc.
