The China National Computer Congress 2018 was held in Hangzhou, China from October 25th to 27th. The project "biologically inspired Features and Fisher vector theory and method research" won the "Science and Technology Award of Natural Science Second Class" prize. This project was under the supervision of Bingpeng Ma, a visiting associate professor of VIPL group. The China National Computer Congress is the highest and largest academic event among China\'s computer field. This year, the China Computer Federation selected one First Prize and three Second Prize of Science and Technology Awards for Natural Science to reward theoretical breakthroughs or scientific discoveries in basic research or applied basic research in computer and related fields.
The award-winning project aims to automatically identify the person identity in videos. Focus on the core issue of person feature extraction, it propose a new method of combining biologically inspired features and covariance matrix for person re-identification. The proposed method is also verified on face recognition problem and head pose problem. In addition, the project introduces Fisher vector into the person re-identification problem, and proposes a joint solution strategy for person detection and recognition with several new methods for solving person re-identification in images and videos by using Fisher vector.
